Why You Should Vacuum Seal Your Lure

Winter is almost over, which means you'll be breaking out your fishing boat soon to spend some time on the open waters. You've got your tackle box, your favorite rod and an unrelenting spirit, but how can you be sure your lure will be as effective as possible?

Retaining the integrity of your lure is crucial for attracting the best fish around, but pieces can often get ruined when stored in a container with other lures. Thankfully, there are several ways you can keep your lure as fresh as the day you purchased it.

Certain Lures Require Extra Care
Lures come in a variety of shapes and sizes, from lifelike, gooey worms to flashy, feathered bait. When kept in a conventional tackle box, your lures can become crossed, crushed or otherwise ruined. Some boxes come with individual drawers or departments to keep lures from tangling with one another. While this is an effective way to organize traditional lures, it doesn't do much for those that are particularly fragile, such as lures that have strong scents.

It's equally important that you keep your lures stored in a cool, dry place when they're not in use. Since your bait is fragile by nature, it's susceptible to the effects of many environmental factors, including sunlight, heat and water. After each use, gently clean your lures before placing them back in the tackle box - this will prevent mold or mildew from forming due to residual water.

How to Seal Delicate Lures
Keeping your lures in the right storage place is imperative for preserving their shapes, but retaining things you can't see - like scent and moisture - requires greater care. Use your FoodSaver® GameSaver® vacuum sealer and follow these steps to ensure your bait remains viable between fishing trips.

Step 1: Prep the Container
Plastic vacuum sealer bags will work well for most tackle, but if you've got a particularly fragile one, you'll want to use a container with a sturdier case.

Step 2: Remove Some - Not All - Air
After you've placed your lures in the container, you'll want to remove the majority of the air, but leave a small cushion to prevent pieces from getting crushed. The airtight environment will preserve scents and prevent grime from ruining the lures.

Step 3: Store Neatly
After preserving each of your lures, you'll want to keep them organized in a tidy fashion so they can be easily removed and used.
